On Sunday 27th May 2012 I wandered into the city with my camera to photograph some Sydney Sunday Street Music, in other words some of our leading buskers doing what they do best.
Busking has come a long way since the days of one guy with an out of tune guitar singing Bob Dylan, badly. Well, that was pretty much what I was brought up with.
Today I came across firstly a guitarist. It's a little hard to describe his style, kind of classical, kind of manic, but certainly kind of brilliant. I believe his name is Tom Ward, but if I'm wrong hopefully someone can correct me.
All I can say is, if he is a regular in Centre Point Mall on Sundays, get along and have a listen, far more value than some of the expensive and less talented overseas plastic pop stars we see over here.
I hope his photographs can capture a little of the magic I felt while watching and listening.
So, that was all good for a little classical style craziness, but what about some rock 'n' roll?
Funny you should ask. Firstly, any street band game to do The Beatles version of Twist and Shout and also throw in Love Me Do wins 1 million street cred points from me immediately. Very cool guys, very cool.
Four guys, the most basic of equipment and having fun. That's what rock is all about really. Imagine my surprise when the lead singer reaches into his pocket and pulls out a gobstopper (a mouth organ to the uninitiated) and starts blowing the intro to Love Me Do! Awesome!
I was sold. How cool to hear such terrific music in the midst of hundreds of street zombies barely capable of even remembering what a smile is, too busy rushing around I guess. Anyway, here are "The Fun Guys", let me know who you are.
